I learned the meaning of "cold call". Why do you say "cold"? It's intriguing.

"Cold" means there was no forewarning or preparation for the action. You can warm an engine, a baseball pitcher "warms" his throwing arm by practicing, a runner "warms" up his leg muscles by stretching or lightly jogging.
