I have talked about "karaoke" with several foreigners on this week. Surprisingly none of them know that karaoke was invented in Japan. I thought this fact is popular. The word "Karaoke" is consisted of 2 Japanese words, Kara and Oke. "Kara" means "Vacant", and "Oke" means "Orchestra". In short, "karaoke" means "vacant orchestra" in Japanese. I have explained this to them. Additionally I don't like karaoke because I don't know many songs.

You're welcome. :) It's funny, in America we pronounce karaoke so strangely that when I first met my friend from Japan, and she invited me to karaoke I had no idea what she meant. :D

I read that the man who invented karaoke never made any money out of the machine as he didn't patent it. He said he did run some bars though so could make a living, but was just happy that he had given a gift to the world, what a nice guy!

I thought that it was invented in Japan. I never tried Karaoke though. It's not so popular in my country

多分、この場合は「foreigner」の代わりに「westerner」や「non-Japanese person」というほうが自然ですね。Kosukeさんは今ヨーロッパにいるなので、ヨーロッパ人にとってはKosukeさんはいわゆる「外国人」なのですね。(^_^)
