Can anyone elaborate more on the - 군 salutation?

I heard this -군 salutation before but I don't really understand exactly what is it used for.

From my understanding, it's a salutation used when addressing someone politely.

Is it only used among males?

I can't really find a clear elaboration on-line.

From my understanding (which is by no means perfect, as I am still studying too), I believe it is only used for males, and usually only on formal occasions.

군은 남자 이름 뒤에 쓰는 거예요...
공식적인 자리에서도 쓰고 비공식적인 자리에서도 쓰지만 보통 별로 안 친한 사람들끼기....근데 거의 잘 안 써요....
참고로 여자한테는 '양'을 쓰지요...
그냥 대부분 '씨'라고 합니다.
