Gondola no Uta

Gondola no Uta (the Gondola song) is a song released in 1915.
Because of its beautiful lyrics, many Japanese people still know some parts of them even if they don't know the title.
The phrase "いのち短し 恋せよ乙女" which means "life is brief, fall in love, maidens" is particularly famous among young people, quoted by many animations, mangas, and novels.
The composer borrowed some phrases from Venetian folksong, one homepage told me.
Another site told me that he used the phrase appeared in "Improvisatoren" written by Christian Andersen.
