Are there any differences between two sentences?

1【Verb＋ing】
The political oppposition in Yemen warned the government on Thursday that violence against street protesters demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Shaleh could derail a deal to end the political standoff.

2 【Relative Pronoun】
The political oppposition in Yemen warnnd the government on Thursday that violence against street protesters who is demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Shaleh could derail a deal to end the political standoff.

Well, it would have to be 'who are' instead of 'who is' (since protestors is plural), but the first sentence sounds more natural to me anyway. The second sentence isn't wrong though, but you'd need some commas:

"The political oppposition in Yemen warned the government on Thursday that violence against street protesters, who are demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Shaleh, could derail a deal to end the political standoff."
