Jul 22, 2012 11:27 capital punishment hanging Catholicism
I visited an old jail a few years ago. The correctional officers showed me the courtyard where they hanged people. I looked in the window of a steel door that had not been opened in many years to a courtyard paved in brick, which weeds were poking through.
I heard a strange story.
One of the last men condemned to death there had asked for a priest to give his last confession.
But when the priest came to the cell, they found that the man had already hanged himself.
Catholics believe that suicides go to hell, but those who are executed after confession can go to heaven.
Can the pain of waiting for the noose be worse than the fear of hell?
