When I count my fingers, I hold fingers from sum. Many of my friends do like me. However, I heard forieners do not do so. I heard many people strech their fingers. I strech my fingers, but it is hard to do so. When we count numbers, our brain region which is involved in finger movement is activated without counting our fingers. Thus, finger movement must be important for concept of number. It is very interesting that behavior of counting our fingers is dependent on our culture.

What do you do when you count with your fingers?
When I count with my fingers, I hold fingers from sum.
not sure what this means - hold fingers from sum
However, I heard foreigners do not do so.
I stretch my fingers, but it is hard to do so.
The English in the book is wrong - could you put in your own words what's happening - In North America we start with our 'pointing finger' and open each finger out.
This is not book. I translate Japanese explanation into English. It may be wrong.
Thank you and I improved the pictures!
Many of my friends do it this way/ Many of my friends do like I do. - just a couple of options.
However, I heard foreigners do it differently.
I heard many people stretch their fingers.
That is interesting! When I am counting I start with my thumb. If I am indicating a number to someone I use my fingers (ie. index finger for 'one', index + middle for 'two' etc.)
It is good information, thank you!
