One of my neighbors called my husband early this morning.He said the Japanese apricot tree,ume, in our garden fell down.So we went out to see it.The ume was broken half by yesterday's strong wind.But the root leaves in the ground,so the tree is still alive. We picked up the apricots.I will make juice using them!!

I don't think I've ever had apricot juice. Sounds interesting!

What is the differences between"the roots are in the ground" and "the roots were in the ground? Put apricots(1kg),sugar(1kg)and clear liquor in a bottle.It will be apricot juice.By the way, I don't put any liquor because I don't like any alcoholic beverage.

In this case, they're basically the same, but your story is written in past tense, so "the roots were in the ground" means that when you saw the roots, they were in the ground.
