I have heard voices of pheasants around my house these days and sometimes meet them in a grassy place.
There is an old story about a pheasant.
Long long ago there was a poor family.
One day their only daughter got a serious ill and she said, "I want to eat red rice."
Her parents had no money but they wanted her to give what she wanted.
So her father stole a little rice and azuki beans from landowner's house and her mother made red rice with them for her daughter.
She ate the rice and miraculously got better.
Then the landowner tried to find the thief.
A villager heard the girl singing, "I ate red rice," and noticed that her parents were the thief.
As soon as he reported the landowner, the parents were arrested and killed.
Since then, the girl had never spoken.
A few years later she became 15 years old.
When she was by the river, she saw a pheasant was shot.
Then she said with small voice, "You would have never been shot if you hadn't sang(お前も鳴かずば撃たれまい)."

Yes, whenever I hear the voice of a pheasant, I remember the story.
なんとも悲しいお話です。以前「日本昔話」というテレビ番組でみた記憶に頼りながら書いたので細かい所は原作とはちがうかもしれません。
