(a) The farther away a thing is, the smaller it looks.
(b) The farther a thing is, the smaller it looks.

I think (a) is correct, but I'm not sure (b) is.
Do (b) make sense without "away"?

I prefer (a) to (b)

both make sense, but with (b) the 'away' is implied and so that makes it slightly harder to read than (a) which is easier to understand.

"the farther something is" sounds better to me than "the farther a thing is" as well, not sure if that's the same for all English readers or just me!

解答ではなくて申し訳ないですが。
"farther" で距離的な "隔たり" を表現しているが、
"away" が入ることによって視点から "離れた" 感覚が加わり理解しやすいということでしょうか。
