= what a man looks like (1)
= what a man seems?? (2)
I feel (1) has almost the same meaning as "a man's appearance",
but (2) is somewhat different from it.
Is this right?

"seems" is really an impression of something, so if a man seems nice, my impression of the man is that he was nice. It isn't limited to just how he looks.
I hope that's helpful!
The word "appearance" can refer to a person's looks.
But you can also use expressions like:
"Appearances can be deceiving." --> You can be fooled by how something looks. Maybe a person looks healthy on the outside, but has cancer. Maybe an object looks like it's made of gold, but really it's just made of cheap metal with some paint on it.
"To keep up appearances." --> To pretend that everything is OK, even though it really isn't.
So the word can refer to what something seems to be, even though it is really something else.
There are also other meanings, for instance: "The celebrity made an appearance at the charity auction" = "showed up", "was present"
You've made me more confident about this.
And Mr.cpaster, thank you too for teaching me useful phrases!!
