I rode on Amtrak for the first time from New York to Washington.
There were three differences from the way of train operation in Japan.
First of all, the fare is rising as it gets closer to the riding date.
The second, we can't wait for the train on the plat home which is closed until just before the arrival of the train.
The third, the seat is not assigned to the passenger before boding. We get seats on the train by ourselves and the train officer confirms the seats. Since our coach was full with the passengers to Washington at New York, the passengers from another station couldn't find a seat in our coach.

Did you ride the Acela? Metroliner? or the "regular" train?
And, regular riders know how to wait on the platform instead of at the gate. The elevators to the platforms (for people in wheelchairs) are always open, and you only have to look at the "arrivals" screen for the #181 train from Boston to know which platform to go to. Then, you can also board the train before everyone else gets to the platform. It took me years to learn all of those tricks. lol
I rode the regular train.
Next time I will try the Acela with the tricks which you advised.
