ウェールズ語

私の家族はもともとウェールズ出身で、今でも沢山の家族の人達はそこに住んでいます。父の家族は南の方にいますが、母の家族は北に住んでいます。行ったら分かると思いますけれど、北と南のウェールズ人はちょっと違います。まずは、首都の周りに住んでいる人たちはウェールズ語を話せないみたいです。そしてアクセントも全然違います。

子供の頃から、父も母も祖父母たちもたまにウェールズ語の単語を英語と平行に使っていました。例えば、「乾杯！」の代わりに「Iechyd da!」とか「おやすみ」の代わりに「Nos da」と言います。（因みに、daの意味はgoodで、Iechydの意味はhealthです）
それでも、私はウェールズ語を全然話せません。最近になって初めてそれはちょっと残念だなと思い始めました。今年の夏、母と祖母の家族に会いに行くので、ちょっと勉強したくなりました。

おそらく、勉強しないかもしれません。。

それともうひとつ書きたいことがあります。
こういう話をしたら、外国人に「ウェールズ語って英語と同じじゃない？」と聞かれました。
それは違います。英語の方言じゃないですよ。ちゃんと別々な言語です。
しかし無論、英語と似ている部分もあります。


さて、
もう一度ピースメーカーの舞台を見ようと思います。

My family is originally from Wales, and a lot of my family still lives there. My father's side of the family are in the South of Wales, and my mother's live in the North. If you go there you'll probably notice, but the southerners and northerners in Wales are slightly different. It doesn't seem like people living in or around the capital speak Welsh. Also, their accents are completely different.

Since I was little, my mum and dad and grandparents often used Welsh words alongside English. For example, 'Iechyd da' instead of 'cheers!' or 'nos da' instead of 'goodnight'.
Even so, I can't speak Welsh at all. It's only recently that I've started to think that's a shame.

This summer, I will go to Wales to visit my grandmother's side of the family, so I kind of want to study it a little.

But I probably won't.


Also, there's something also I wanted to write.
When I bring this up, I've been asked 'Aren't Welsh and English the same?' by foreigners.
No. It's not a dialect, they are actually different languages.
Though naturally there are parts that are similar.


Well, I think I'm going to go watch the stage production of Peacemaker again.
