broccoli2008 : TOEFL Writing: It is better for children to grow up on the countryside than in a big city. Do you agree or disagree? (1)

There are many difference between on the countryside and in a big city, such as natural environment, food safety, living facilities. Many people live in cities, but, in my opinion, they may not be aware of many merits of the countryside living for their children's growth.

Most important, food safety is crucial for children. In recent days, more and more people found that food safety has become a big problem in cities. For example, in China, there are often serious food safety problems exposed by the media, such as harmful ingredients in milk powders, and too much pesticide of residue in vegetables. On the contrary, on the countryside, there are good natural environments. It is easier to get natural and organic vegetables and you will rarely get contaminated food.

In addition, the countryside is a big live classroom for children to learn about nature. There are a variety of animals, plants, flowers, and insects which can not be easily touched in a big city. In cities, most children learn such things just by picture cards or televisions. If children can not get in touch with nature, it may be difficult to cultivate their curiosity and interests for nature and science.

On the one hand, a big city offers many convenience for education and travel, however, many children develop a habit of not doing physical activity, not doing do-it-yourself. Because of a limited playing space and addiction to television, they dislike moving or going outdoors. In some extreme cases, some children become overweight or obese. On the countryside, however, children can freely exercise outdoors in a bigger environment. Compared to children living in a big city, the volume of calories consumed by these movements can be many times. Therefore, children living on the countryside can live a healthier, more active lifestyle.

In conclusion, I think it is a better choice for children to grow up in the countryside.

broccoli2008 : TOEFL Writing: We all work or will work in our jobs with many different kinds of people, In your opinion, what are some important characteristics of a co-worker? (0)

As the topic said, we all work or will work with many different people who have different hobbies, interests, religions, educational backgrounds or different countries. In my views, to be a good co-worker, you may need some good characteristics as below.

Firstly, cooperative characteristic is very important to modern companies. Due to products and services have become more and more complicated, one procedure or process can need a lot of people to work together. If someone were absent from his/her position, he/she would impact negatively on the whole schedule.

Otherwise, to be fair is crucial to be a good coworker. No discrimination and no partial behaviors or opinions will help you win other people's trust and support. To maintain personal or one group's profit or defeat rivals, people would like ones who can stand on their own side, these may lead people lose their fairness and to be adverse status, lastly when organization changed or core figure left, you would be got in trouble in your work.

Finally, other characteristics like energetic, respectful, responsible, considerate, good leadership will also contribute the success of to be a good coworker. There are many examples to tell the importance of these characteristics in some books or specific training courses.

In conclusion, to be a good coworker, you need these characteristics referred above. Such good traits can not only bring companies good profits, but also bring you good performance or raise.

broccoli2008 : TOEFL Writing: Some people think that the automobile has improved modern life. Others think that the automobile has caused serious problems. What is your opinion? (0)

Automobile has played a big role in our modern society development since when it's invented. Although in recent days, more and more people are concerning about traffic and air pollution problems produced by automobile, automobile's positive impact on moder life is far more than it's negative impact.

When referring a remote travel, most people can imagine how difficult it would be if took on foot without automobile. If you have automobile, you can not only go far places if only your fuel is enough, but also take a comfortable and convenient trip. For instance, most automobiles have good performance, air conditioner, audio system, GPS navigation, big goods storage box, and luxurious inner decoration.

Otherwise, automobile industry created many jobs and economic profits for our society. From marketing, design to manufacture and post-sale service, the direct and indirect related industries provide millions of jobs for employment markets every year. If abolishing these industries for automobile problems, it can not be imagined to give an alternative solution to provide the same number of jobs.

To be honest, some concerns about automobile problems, such as traffic jam, air pollution are becoming more and more common, there are already emerged some new techniques for solving these problems, such new techniques like hybrid power engine, battery driven car, smart traffic control system etc. I predict that these problems would be solved in next two or three decades, automobile would still play a big role in our modern lives.

broccoli2008 : TOEFL Writing: Some people believe that the Earth is being harmed by human activity. Others feel that human activity makes the Earth a better place to live. What is your opinion? (2)

In recent days, more and more people are concerning environment protection. They are worrying about their living conditions are becoming more and more worse for the gradually worsen environments. I think these concerns are necessary and reasonable. I believe the main reasons are from some human activities.

One of some problems occurred in human activities is that carbon dioxide emission has no indication of decrease, but an steady increase year by year. As we all known, too much carbon dioxide can get the Earth too warm to lead to some extreme climates, such as floods recently happened in Australia and Europe, blizzards in North America. The carbon dioxide emission always accompanies with the usage of automobile powered by gasoline and fuel electric powers. Fortunately, some natural energy resources, like wind, solar power are utilized progressively, I think these actions will benefit the decrease of people's dependence on carbon burning to get power. However, it seems a long way to apply a widely using of these natural energy resources on a large scale.

Another serious problem is sharp decrease of forests. From TV or Internet, you can see many forests are shrinking sharply. For example, Amazon rain forest has reduced largely in decades by the expansion of agriculture, lumbering etc. Although superficially it will improve people's living level with large supply of meat and cereal, people can not benefit from planting crops by deforesting, and probably get punishment from nature. Most scientists believe the recent extreme climate disasters have relationship with the becoming less rain forests to some extent.

Therefore, I believe that human activity has caused serious problems to the Earth by the uncontrollable exploiting. We need to reassess the cost of human activity and give an alternative proper solution for our energy resources immediately.

broccoli2008 : TOEFL Writing: In general, people are living longer now. Discuss the causes of this phenomenon. (1)

People are living more and more longer than before. There are three causes that can explain this phenomenon.

First of all, the living standard level becomes higher than before. The living standard includes inhabiting conditions, the quality and safety of food, the dressing clothes, and traffic tools. For example, modern house has air condition, wet drying, warming system etc. These facilities can give people a comfortable living standard which never existed before.

Secondly, modern medicine and medical treatment contribute the long living of people. As you know, many antibiotic medicine, like Amoxicillin, have developed and saved many people's life. Also, the medical treatment, such as many kind of surgery, can not be done or imagined before.

Finally, the consciousness of sustaining healthy is becoming more and more popular. As you can see from TV or internet, there are many advertisement of healthy lecture, food cooking shows etc. In some extent, the convenience of exchanging each others' ideas of how to keep healthy by every kind of medias play a big role in improving people's healthy consciousness.

broccoli2008 : Live life in a hurry or at a slower pace? (0)

I get used to live life in a hurry although some people may consider this life style is not good for many facts, at least for health, I disagree this point.

First of all, living life in a hurry doesn't harm your health if you do exercise regularly. Although a fast pace life can put some pressure on your body, pressure is not absolutely a bad thing, if only you can manage your pressure, for example, having a coffee chat or reading regularly.

Secondly, living life in a hurry is because of the real society needs. In modern city, making good use of every second is crucial to your career success, just as a saying goes: "Time is Money". During work time, your boss always cares about how you manage your time. If you have a high efficiency and a good time management, you will have a high performance assessment. Outside during work time, you must take as much activities as possible to improve your skills and expand your knowledge, and to do such things like finance managing, attending parties, meeting with friends etc.

Finally, living life in a hurry makes me feel life is substantial. I can remember that when I resigned my job and started to live life at a slower pace, I felt uncomfortable. Although I scheduled many activities, I felt depressed. At last I returned to work again sooner.

broccoli2008 : What are the best ways of reducing stress? (0)

What is stress? Stress is when you are in trouble with something, you have no idea about how to deal with it. Stress can be from work, family, friends, healthy, or anything else. There are many ways of reducing stress, for instance, doing sports exercise, doing entertainments, taking a relaxing vacation, meeting with your parents, relatives or friends and so on. In these kinds of reducing stress, I think communicating with other people is the best ways to reduce stress, the communication types including chat, talk, email, letter, call, etc.

First of all, communication can give you a feedback or suggestion for your situation. When a person is in trouble, she/he usually loses her/his judgement and can not calm down to deal with the trouble. I can remember when I got a start in my first job in the first week, I was very compressed with new colleagues, new work circumstance. I always worried about my job and thought I could not do it well. Just at that time, my parents called to me and learnt about my situation, they shared some experience about what were their feelings when they came into work at first. From this calling, I got some good advices and adjusted my working attitudes and ways. I would call my parents when I encountered some problems although every time I couldn't get solutions what I wanted. At least, to talk with somebody can get you feel like releasing your stress.

Second, compared to vacation, reading books, the ways temporarily shifting your attention to other places, communication can permanently release you stress. Take an example, if you take a vacation when you have a stress came from your work, you can get a short while of relaxation but when you come back to work, you'll return to the status of stress. You'll not really release your stress until you find a solution for your problems. Reading books is also the same to taking vacation. In contrast, through communicating with other people, you are not laying up our problems but sharing your problems with other people and getting some feedbacks or solutions.

Last, by the ways of communication, you can get rapid or real-time responds from your communication patters. For example, after a short conversation with mentors, you will get the answer of a high technical problem, otherwise, you'll take much time to do research, and in the process of doing research, whether will you feel compressed from huge materials and time limitation?

broccoli2008 : A large company or a small one, which do you want to work for? (0)

I used to think that it was honorable to work for a big company, especially for a company listed in "The fortune 500 Global Companies". Now I have changed my views after worked for such company for about 4 years. Compared to small companies I had worked before, I think large companies are more bureaucratic and less innovative than small companies. Small companies are more suitable for whom like to take more challenging works and want to develop more wider professional skills.

Large companies is bureaucratic because all kinds of things need to be followed by processes, policies. I am not opposite that good and moderate scale processes or policies are necessary for doing a safe and effective business. But, as you know, the more large the company becomes, the less effective it's organization becomes. For example, in case of a big company, to purchase a laptop, although the toll is not much, you may need to get an approval from your direct report manager, then forward your manager's approval to second line manager to get a further review and approval. After that, you need forward this approval to get a financial department approval and then at last submit your order to a subcontractor for purchasing. All of these processes would take about 7 working days or more. In contrast, there are no so many processes need to be followed if your purchasing is just a laptop in a small company, all you need to do is just to get an approval from your direct manager and then buy it, and get your payback for it right now.

The second demerit of a large company is common of less innovative. For a bureaucratic and huge organization and a slow response to quick changeable markets, large companies are always get over by new innovative small companies. For instance, the innovative high technological company Google has become a famous and large company in a short time, just about 10 years. Its fortune has surpassed many traditional Fortune 500 Global Companies. Ten years ago, it was just a small company and nobody believed it would bring up so many billionaire employees.

The third thing I concerned is that big companies are not suitable for developing a wide professional skills. In a big company, each job's responsibility is defined more specifically than a small company. For example, as referred above, there are many processes to be followed when you buy a laptop or do some works in a big company, each node of a process has a certain person to authorize. If you are in a product manufacture department, you are no need to care about the product's design or sale works, so you have no opportunities to develop a designing or sale skills. This situation will not benefit you if you want to find a new job or to create your own business in the future. It was said in a famous firm's research report that holing a wide professional skills would help you find or hold your job in a economic recession.

In conclusion, as there are three merits discussed above, I think it is a better choice to work in a small company for such people who want to do efficient, innovative and challenging works, and who want to develop a full professional skills. I am such kind of man, so I want to work for a small company.

broccoli2008 : Reasons why people work other than earning a living (3)

There are many reasons why people work other than earning a living. The reasons varied from many factors, such as age, interest, gender, personal social situation. So, in terms of these factors, I will try to develop the reasons in terms of these factors.

First of all, for age, different age phases have different altitude or expectation. Young people are more vigorous and adventurous than elder people. Because of these characteristics, young people would like to take high-challenging, high-stressful work. For example, army, professional sports are full of young people. Such works emerge or exist are not because people want young people to do them or think young people can do them, but because young people them-self like to do them. In contrast, elder people won't like to do these works.

Next, for interest, different people have different interests in what they want to do. Some people like fashion, they want to be fashion designers. Some people like science, they want to be scientists. When people enter colleges, people can select what majors they are interested in. Then, after graduated from colleges, they also have many opportunities to select what works they want to engaged regardless what they have learned form colleges.

After that, let's look at gender, it's also has much different in works choice. Female people would more like to do services works than male people, as you can see, the number of waitress are more than waiters in restaurant, coffee shop, or hotels.

Finally, for personal social situation, different personal social situations can led to different choices for works. For professional athletes, they work for break records or get metals in games; for politicians, they work for governing their countries and improve people's living level; for entrepreneurs, they work for expanding their business all over the world, etc.

In conclusion, the reasons why people work are different from people to people, the reasons can be interesting, altitude, expectation, responsibility, and anything what you can think about.

broccoli2008 : Do we need "Never, never give up"? (5)

When we were young, we alway heard "Never, never give up" from our parents and teachers. So, when we graduated from college and came in society, most of us were still got used to using sticky strategy, for instance when we were pursuing our dreams, insisting on our judgement, persistent in current job or career. In some times, being sticky and never giving up can make you successful, in other times, however, it may lead to getting frustrated for our unrealizable dreams, unpredictable factors, and fast changing career market. In my opinion, we need to be flexible or learn how to give up in a proper time.

Fist of all, learnt how to give up can make you avoid too pressure to harm your health. When you make yourself invincible, you'll be sensitive and nervous all times. These will put you into a large pressure. If you still stick to go on, the pressure will accumulate more and more, and lastly harm your health. At that time, it is a better choice to give up your pursuing things for your health.

Secondly, learnt how to give up can make you more adaptable to the real world. The world is always in change and many unpredictable factors are affecting you. For example, in career market, especially in high technology fields, you can not insist on the same job for more a decade without no skills' change. Ten years ago, familiar with one or two programming languages is popular in IT(Information Technology) market, but now many those languages were rarely used or replaced with new languages and tools. Sticking to your skills with no change means a risk that you will lost your job in one day.

Finally, learnt how to give up does not mean losing face but giving other people safety or even life. In World War II, if Hitler had given up more earlier, many people would not suffer more time and lose more life from the war. In the world, people would like peace rather than war. There are many conflicts between country and country, eliminating conflicts is a better choice than sticking to each other's opinions without giving up. It is also useful to deal with personal daily conflicts. In some times giving up your opinion and making a concession, if necessary, is a wising way for you and would be helpful for others.

In conclusion, we need to be flexible in a proper time and need to give up the mind of "Never, never give up".

broccoli2008 : Eat at home or Out? (1)

Do you like delicious foods? I think your answers should be like "Yes, Of course". So, Do you good at making a delicious food to satisfy with your friends' tongue? Certainly, it's not easy to cook a nice dishes because cooking is a high technique job. I seldom invite my friends to eat at home because I am not confident in my cooking skill although my friends would not mind of it, or even a clear soup noodles. Making a delicious food is a high technique job because you need to know what kind of food material, tool, and recipe you need to prepare and how to select, use food material and tool, and do a cooking. In China, there are thousands of food material and cooking methods. Even if the material is the same, the taste may be variant from different cooking methods and different chefs. For example, a fish can be made by frying, steaming, cooking or salting etc. The supplementary raw material could be any kind of vegetables or even China Traditional Medicines. So, it is not easy to cook such nice dishes at home, if you invite a friend for a meal, I suggest you go to a restaurant or a chophouse.

For a second consideration of eating out, most Chinese people would like eat out when invite friends or hold celebration activities, such as birthday party, relationship building party. In these situation, usually, there should be a host to pay the bill in turn at this time, the custom is different from Western's dutch treat. For this reason, it would be consider stingy because you will spend less money on eating at home than restaurant, or when your friends invite you in restaurant for a return order next time, you would feel like owing something. Inviting a friend eating at home is not always considered stingy, but at sometimes considered to be too friendship. If your relationship is not so good that eating at home would make your friends uncomfortable and troubled you.

Finally, eating out can be considered convenient and save more time to chat or do other things. Eating out could be less one third of the time than eating at home, that is, if taking twenty minutes in restaurant would taking one hour at home. After meal, eating out means no need to do washing dishes and cleaning work. Especially, when you invite a lot of people for a meal, eating at home would be a very much challenging work. For example, when I got an admission offer from a college when I was eighteen years old, my parents invited many friends and relatives to celebrate it, there were about 80 people and each eight people took sits around a round desk with eighteen dishes, the total amount of dishes were over one hundred. It was such a huge work that I remembered by now. Anyway, it was a happy and delicious party. Now, in my hometown, many such parties would be held in restaurant for convenience and delicious tastes.

Certainly, there are many reasons to support my view that eating out is more better than eating at home when you inviting friends for a meal. In contrast, if you have time or want to save money, it is a better choice to eat at home.

broccoli2008 : Does luck have anything to do with success? (1)

There is a proverb said that chance favors the prepared mind. I believe in that. Prepared mind means hardworking, ongoing study, persevering, and being more professional etc. No doubt, the key factor of success is on yourself, but not on luck. As a Chinese saying said "Man proposes, God disposes".

I am a hard-working man, when I set a goal to do something, I will try my best to do it whatever the final result is successful or failed. Although I am so lucky that I have passed many exams in many times, I attribute these success to my hardworking and perseverance. For example, I past my college entrance exam, which entrance ratio was about 1:30 before sixteen years ago, and I past my postgraduate entrance exam, which entrance ratio was lower and competition was harder than a exam I have ever taken before. There is a little skill or technique in exam although, most of time is preparation for it, such as studying and reviewing, just as a saying said "No pain, No gain". After graduated from school, as a salary man or a businessman, working hard is also considered as an important performance assessment point in most of companies. I can still remember that before five years ago I took on a new project and was assigned as a key role faced directly with customer of Japan. It was a big challenge for me that I was a new comer in that business field and the delivery date was so urgent that no enough time to study and to take job training gradually. I worked very late every day and took my spare time to investigate problems and collect solutions. At last, customer was satisfied with my hard-working altitude and made a contrast with my company.

There are also many stories about how working hard is important for success. For example, Tomas Edison, the great and intelligent inventor, had done thousands of experiments before finding a final solution for the short life duration problem of light bulb. Also, the Chinese pianist Lang Lang has been famous in the world. Behind his honor and success was that he was practicing very hard every day when he was only three years old. Because of his hard-working and talented performance, he gained his first chance to attend an international contest and got a champion. As his first performing was successful in the international stage, then by his continuous hard-working, he got many chances to show his talented performance and becomes more and more successful in the world music stage.

At last, as "Man proposes, God dispose" referred previously, luck is not considered as an important factor for most of successful people, but in some situations, luck may be important to you, for example, when you buy a lottery, make a bet with someone or get an unpredicted trouble. I think such things are seldom occurred and rarely happened to you. If things you are going to do are not decided by luck, just try your best.

broccoli2008 : Which is more important, book knowledge or experience? (2)

Most of people may think that book knowledge and experience both are important. In my opinion, I agree that view, which one is more important is depended on case by case. In concept, book knowledge is the summaries from experience. The experience often proceeds on basic knowledge. For example, In initial phase of human being civilization, people can not write in language symbols. After the language symbols invented, people can summarize their experience in book then formalize the book knowledge. But, not all experience can be written in book, experience is formed in a process or procedure, it is different from the book knowledge that book knowledge is static and not changed. So, what kind of cases would be that book knowledge is more important than experience, or otherwise not.
First of all, for learners, such as students in studying, the book knowledge is more important than experience. In school, the main teaching method is conducted by textbook. For efficiency consider, students can learn a mount of knowledge from book in a short time. There may be some practice although, but the duration is short.
Second, for the people graduated from school, such as employee, scientists, explorers, their are faced a new environment, the place which is full of uncertainty factors that are not specified in book. For example, the communication skills, the analysis ability, the solving problem ability and the sensitivity of new phenomenons or events. These abilities are difficult to be learnt from book, although there are some theories or guides about them. In some extent, experience can be said as a custom or behavior that was formed in past days, and can give you ability that how to do when the case is different from textbook.
At last, there are many cases to certify that book knowledge or experience is more important than other one, In generally, in any time, you should not copy the book knowledge or other people's experience to your case without your decision and thinking. In some time, both are good and constructive to you, in some time, either would not be.

broccoli2008 : Are parents the best teachers? (0)

Obviously, the answer is Not. If parents are the best teachers, there would be no need of teachers. Why parents are not the best teachers, in my views, the main reason is that most of parents don't know how to teach and what need to teach. As science and technology become more and more sophisticated, education field is become more and more professional. Some parents may be experts in some fields, but at the same time may be freshmen in other fields. For example, a plumber may have no idea of arithmetic, a painter may not aware of physics. In school, education as professional career, teacher can take the role of what need to teach and how to teach. Also, parents as teachers have other negative effects on the growth of children. For instance, the children always listen to parents may be no independence on individual ability of thinking and learning. At last, anything has two sides, parents are the people which stays with children for longest time, they also are some of the most influential people to children. Their behavior, custom, talking could be good impact to children, also could be bad impact to children no matter their parents themselves do know or not. In the conclusion, parents are not the best teachers of children, but you can say parents are the first teachers and the most potential teachers.

broccoli2008 : Prepare for TOELF iBT Test (0)

As I am going to take a TOELF iBT exam in July, today I start to practise writing. I have learned English for many years, but my writing and spoken are still poor. I think the main reason is that I didn't practise doing these or have no chance to do these. I recognize that a good language platform, for instance Lang-8, can give you a good chance to improve my these skills. Eight years ago, when I graduated from university, I went to Japan and get my first job. I started Japanese from zero to communication level in work after two years. The important factor that I can speak fluently is that I speak this language everyday in anywhere.
It is really important to practise more and more speaking, listening, and writing every day for me now if I want to good at these skills in English.
I am welcome everybody to be my friends to do language exchange. I can teaching your Chinese and if possible, we can learn Japanese together.

broccoli2008 : Why people attend college? (0)

There is couple of reasons for why people attend college. In my opinion, the major reason is that attending college is the way to get a degree for finding a good salary job.

First, college provides degrees, but high school or below can't provides degrees. In many countries, the education before college, including high school, primary school is basic and mandatory. This means everyone can get the same education, you'll have no competitive in job market. So, To find a better job, many people study hard and try to get a ticket entrance of college. People who get the entrance of college would be more competitive in job market and get higher salary than the others which not attend college.

Second, in job market, many positions need degree held. To get a degree in college, people must study a set of courses and get a score specified by degree requirement. These courses provide a professional knowledge and skills. If people get the degree, it certified that people get a professional knowledge and skills that employer would acknowledge.

Last, attending college and getting a degree do not mean you should get a higher salary than others who don't attend college. That is, I want to say, good lucky and chance are also important before you finding a better job.

In my conclusion, attending college is a effective way to get a good job.
