Why aren’t most American/British TV stations interested in Japan and Japanese so much?

I sometimes watch ABC/BBC news on the Web or on TV.
Some of my Japanese friends who are studying English while watching those news said that they could rarely watch news about Japan/Japanese on them.
I was surprised and wondering if that is true.
Is Japan such a small country? Isn’t it so important for the world?
How about other countries? Doesn’t American TV news broadcast any news about Asian, like Chinese, Korean, and so on?
Could you tell me how often do you watch Japanese news on TV?

Japanese TVs also like gossip about movie star.

I see. Well I don't watch TV much anymore anyway. I watch anime online instead. haha. I like the internet better.
