I have a really good British friend. He is a diligent Japanese learner, and he and I have been doing languages exchange through Skype twice a week.
Since I'm not used to listening to British accented English, it is pretty hard for me to understand what he says. I sometimes get lost his conversations.
In my case, I have some really really good American friends, and I enjoy chatting with them on Skype every day. Therefore, I've already gotten used to listening to American accented English.
However, I'm curious about British accented English recently. I think I've been influenced by my British friend. When we chat, he always explains me about his country, culture, history or other stuff. As you know England has long history, so their culture is pretty complicated. That's why his stories are always attractive for me.
While I'm looking at the websites or YouTube videos that he sends me, I love thinking about his country.
To tell you the truth, I can understand what he says perfectly. Therefore, I would love to improve my hearing skill more and more. I really would like to be able to understand what he says more. I want to understand both American accented English and British English. Therefore, I'm going to listen to British English more from now on.
I also have another plan to conquer British English. In my case, I'm not good at reading British English. Although I've wanted to read " Harry Potter" series in English since I've started to study English, I've been hesitating to read. However, if I avoided to read British English, I've never been able to read them. Therefore, I want to try to read " Harry Potter" series, and I want to get used to British English more.

Why are you hesitating to read the Harry Potter series ?! I read your previous entries and you seem to have read a lot of stuff already. Harry Potter is not anything challenging linguistically ! It's quite fun to read actually, I read the whole series through 3 times, and they were all rewarding (Entertainingly).
I think the best thing about long series' is that, when you finish them, you forget the beginning, and you can read them all the way through as if it's your first time ! =D
Don't worry if you don't understand everything in the books, I remember reading it when I was much younger and my English was really lousy. I didn't understand the whole lot of it, but when I reread it, I understood most of the parts that I couldn't comprehend at first.
Go for it, and tell me when you do, I'll race you through the series if you want. And clear any parts that you do not understand ! ^_^
Cheers to you !
British and American English sound so different indeed! However, written British English and American English don't differ by that much, just some differences in spelling/expressions. For example: color (US) and colour (UK), gasoline (US) and petrol (UK), etc.
