When I go to Tokyo, I can meet some foreign strangers at the platform of station. I always think that if I have confidence more to speak to them in English, I can communicate with them and enjoy talking to them.
However, I don't have the enough brave to speak to them in English, and I loose good opportunities to talk to them.
I have a question to my foreign friends who have lived in Japan.
My question is that you've spoken to Japanese stranger in English when you'd lived in Japan.
If you have the similar opportunity, please tell me about it.
I really would love to speak to foreign strangers in English when I meet them. However, I have no idea how I speak to them first.
For instance, " Hello. Nice to meet you. My name is Yumi learning English for a while. Would you mind if I speak to you in English? "
Does it sound comfortable to you? Could you give me better phrases that have similar meaning?
It is a BIG challenge for me to speak foreign strangers in English though, I'm sure that it is really good practice for me to improve both communication skill and speaking English skill.
Even if it looks like awkward in front of other Japanese, I'm also stranger in Tokyo and want to try to talk to them.
I believe that the first talking is the hardest but second one is easier than first one in mental.
If you were spoken by strangers, did you accept their offer or not?

Give Me Your Ideas!
When I go to Tokyo, I sometimes/often see some foreign strangers at the station/train platform of station.
I always think that if I had the confidence more to speak to them in English, I would communicate with them and enjoy talking to them.
However, I (don't have the enough courage)/(am not brave enough) to speak to them in English, and I lose many good opportunities to talk to them.
I have a question for my foreign friends who have lived in Japan.
My question is have you ever spoken to a Japanese stranger in English when you lived in Japan?
If you have had a similar experience, please tell me about it.
However, I have no idea how to approach them.
My name is Yumi. I've been learning English for a while.
Does it sound okay to you?
Could you give me/Can you think of better phrases that have similar meanings?
It is a BIG challenge for me to speak to foreign strangers in English though, I'm sure that it is really good practice for me to improve both my ability to communicate and speak in English. (speaking English skill is not as natural as "ability to speak English." In fact, most skills are better off expressed this way. Ability to cook. Ability to talk to women. Ability to swim for days.)
Even if it looks like awkward in front of other Japanese, I'm also a stranger in Tokyo and want to try to talk to them.
I think that it's harder to start a conversation with a stranger than it is to be approached by one. (意訳)
If you were spoken to by strangers, did you converse with them or not? ("accept their offer or not?" assumes they are offering you something, like a trip to spain, or a great deal on a new TV.)
「日本人ですか・・・・」
I have a lot of experience with this. Every time I see a Japanese person I try to talk to them. For the most part, it goes pretty well which is amazing since I'm a very reserved person and the Japanese that I run into are typically pretty girls.
Talking to anybody is pretty easy. You just have to notice something. Anything. You could start with "I like your shirt, where did you get it?" "What kind of dog is that?" and you can play off of anything they return with. Eventually, you can introduce yourself and ask them "So what brings you to Japan?" or "Are you visiting or do you live here?" At this point, you will be hearing their life story. Like you said earlier, just have a genuine interest in the other person.
You don't really need to ask for a conversation. You automatically start one the moment you open your mouth.
Maybe I will also get nervous if I have to talk to a Japanese in Japanese language. I can't imagine that.
Well..I think that only your mood is important.
If you have a mood to talk, like meeting a cool guy,
it's just a time to talk to.
But if you don't,you must not to talk to anyone.
Take it easy.
I would agree with you :) i would be nervous but I think you are brave enough!
Hi, Will. Thank you for the correction. Yesterday I went to Tokyo though, I didn't meet any gaisin-san at the staion. Therefore, I didn't have a chance to speak to them in Ensligh. Tomorrow I will also go to Tokyo and maybe I will have a chant to speak tthem in English. If I can find the chance, I will try it!
Hi, Brandon. Thank you for your comment. I don't have brave enough to speak English to foreign strangers though, I will do my best! hahaha
Hi,Shifu-san. If you have the chance to speak in Japanese to Japanese strengers, don't miss it!
Jiro-san. Thank you for your comment. Yeah I will take it easy. Thank you for a good advice!
