I like Japanese dolls calling 市松人形＝いちまつにんぎょうin Japanese so much. I think my first sight at Japanese dolls was my childhood. I saw them at my grandmother's house.
She displayed boy doll wearing grey kimono and girl doll wearing red kimono at her house. Both of them looked so pretty that I liked seeing them. I think both of them were made by bisque.
When my grandmother were alive, she took care of the dolls. However, after she dead, nobody took care of them, and I've forgotten their existence for a long time.
When I came back to my hometown at the end of last year,I went to my grandparents' house which has no liver after a long time ago.
Because my mother decided to sale their house.
I met them again there. They changed quite different from my grandmother's aliving days. When I saw them, I was really shocked.
Their kimonos were broken with dust, and their faces were also fulled with dust. They seemed to cry for a long time without being looked after.
To tell the truth, I've wanted them since I was a child. However their owner was my grandmother, and I knew that I couldn't say that I wanted them.
I asked my mother that if nobody wants these dolls, I want them. At first my mother seemed a bit surprised that why I want such dirty dolls, but she remembered that I love Japanese dolls at once.
Luckily for me, nobody wanted them. Therefore, I could be owner them. My mother found out the person who can make new kimonos for them, and asked her to repair my dolls.
My dolls will come to my house at the end of this year. I'm looking forward to seeing them again very much. I believe that they will reborn very pretty.

They seemed as if they cried for a long time without being looked after.
I asked my mother that "If nobody wants these dolls, I want them."
At first my mother seemed a bit surprised that why I want such dirty dolls, but then she remembered that I love Japanese dolls at once.
Therefore, I could own them.
My mother found a person who can make new kimonos for them, and asked her to repair my dolls.
The word "a" is a tricky one to master since Japanese doesn't have anything like it. We use the word "a" to indicate we're talking about something specific. I think grammar wizards call them "definite articles". Put another way, you use the word "a" when there is only one of whatever it is you're talking about, and you know it.
The dolls are wearing "a kimono" because you know exactly which kimono they're wearing. On the other hand, you could say "The dolls are wearing kimonos." Because there are two dolls, and they are each wearing a kimono, you can't use "a". Examples with and without "a":
I want an apple.
I want some apples.
I wish I could wear a kimono.
I wish I could wear kimonos.
(These actually wind up meaning the same thing, that you can't wear any kimono at all, even though the 2nd makes it sound like you want to wear 2 or more at once.)
I know a person who can fix your kimono.
I know some people who can fix your kimono.

It is actually the opposite. "A" is the indefinite article and "the" is the definite article of English. The explanation of the definite article was right, though. :)
"I know a person who can fix your kimono.
I know some people who can fix your kimono."
Let's add a third sentence and you'll see what's wrong with this explanation:
"I know the person who can fix your kimono."
This fits your description of the definite article, doesn't it? Now there is only one person who can do it. In the first sentence there were many people but you only know one of them.
So. The article "a" means that there is only one of them, but you don't care what it is. "I want an apple." - Any apple would do, I just want an apple. "A" is also used when something is introduced. In my humble opinion, you tend to use "a" in same sentences when you would use が in Japanese. You can also think of it as 「ある」. I don't actually know any other way to say that in English. :D
りんごがありました。 - There was an apple.
（その）りんごは赤いでした。 - The apple was red.
（ある）テーブルの上にありました。 - It was on a table.
I hope this helps a little.
We don't have anything like articles, either. :D
...though we do have singluar and plural forms of nouns.
I don't think "a" and が have much in common, though. が seems to have more in common with the word "the". I believe the sentence 子供たちが遊んでいます。is valid, but you can't use "a" here. ("A children" sounds very wrong. You could use "the", however.
Well of course. "A" can't be used with plural forms because it indicates the number, too. "I saw a children" sounds just as bad as saying "I saw one children", doesn't it?

That's true, but the nuance wouldn't be the same as in the Japanese sentence. I think 「子供たちは遊んでいます」 would be closer to "The children are playing."

definite singular: the + noun
indefinite plural: (nothing) + noun + -(e)s (or just the irrelgular plural form)
definite plural: the + noun + -(e)s (or just the irrelgular plural form)
I don't think I've learnt this anywhere. I just made this up, thinking about the French grammar at the same time. It's mostly the same in Swedish, too.
I think the difference between 子供たちは遊んでいます and 子供たちが遊んでいます, though, is just where you want to put your emphasis. "が" places emphasis on the kids, while "は" does not.
I listen to lots of spoken Japanese, and they use "が" with plurals, proper names, and probably other instances where using "a" is a big no no, thus making it very hard to see any similarity between the two words.
On the contrary, I can see a lot of ways in which が is similar to "the". You can say "Children are playing outside." or "The children are playing outside." The difference between these two sentences is probably only that the children in the former sentence are not as important to you as the ones in the latter.
Or maybe it's just that I can't put my thoughts into words or something. Well, at least both "a" and が are used when something new is introduced. "Once upon a time, a girl and a boy met in a big city."
At first, I just wanted to correct that "definite article" thing. Your explanation "when there is only one of whatever it is you're talking about, and you know it" reminded me of the situation when there is only one of something in the world, and that's when "the" is used (ex. "the sun was shining").
I believe that yumi already knows when to use the "a" article, she just forgot to use it there.
