When you hear “あう”in Japanese, there are a lot of meanings, so it depends on what is the subject.
【会う】means meet and seeing
1.これから、友達(ともだち)と会(あ)うのよ。
1.I’ll meet my friend now.
When you use this Kanji of “会”which means party or association
or these words as follows have it own meaning…
会社(company) 会議(conference) 会場(assembly hall, meeting place) 会員(membership)
会話(conversation)展覧会(exhibition)
2.彼(かれ)は展覧会(てんらんかい)に絵(え)の出品(しゅっぴん)をする。
2. He will show hid painting at the exhibition.
【合う】means fit and suit
3.彼女(かのじょ)は靴(くつ)が合(あ)うかどうか試(ため)しに履(は)いてみた。
3.She tried on a pair of shoes to see if they fit.
【逢う】means both sides advance each other, and meet in a certain scene.. But we use rarely this Kanji now recently.
4.逢(あ)うは別(わか)れの始(はじ)まり(this is a set expression.)
4. We never meet without a parting.
【遭う】means encounter or getting caught in.
5.彼(かれ)は渋滞(じゅうたい)に遭(あ)った。
5. He got caught in traffic.

Also, the following words have their own meanings...
【逢う】means both parties move forward simutaneously and meet at a certain place, but we rarely use this kanji nowadays.
But we use rarely this Kanji now recently.
【遭う】means encountering or getting caught in.

「友だちに会う」と「友だちと会う」とどちらがいいですか。どちらがいいじゃないか。
どっちもOK。
友だちに会う = emphasizes "you" are meeting your friend
友だちと会う = "sort of" implies your friend is also making some effort to meet you; it also feels like the 友だちと part is emphasized a little bit here rather than who (you) is meeting your friend.
It might be just my thing... I don't think it's even explained or defined in official publications. It kind of makes sense, though when I think about which one people tend to use under certain circumstances. For example....
さっき友だちと会ってきた!
= kind of sounds like both you and your friend came out to somewhere to meet
さっき友だちに会(いに行)ってきた。
= this is more suitable if you are trying to say you made some effort to go see your friend
