Discourse markers

I learned”Discourse markers” in English class at the university yesterday.

”Discourse markers” have functions like topic shifts, fillers, stressing, hedging, or backchanneling.

Um…, Er…, Eh?, Huh?, Uh-huh, Mm, Ah!, and Aaah!.



We listened to the conversation being used these “Discourse markers”.

I couldn’t understand the one word.

That is “Aaah!”

The conversation is following.

Mother: Katie said her first word today.
Father: Really? What was it?
Mother: She said “Daddy”
Father: “Aaah!”

The father’s tone of voice didn’t sound happy for me.

It seemed that he was depressed from torn of his voice.
