I want to say "recently" so I use recientemente. Is it wrong? reciente is "recently" in Spanish?

You're right,actually "recently" is the exact translation , but somehow the sentence doesn't make sense.However,you can find a way to make it fit,like:
Yo siempre he sido muy deportista, sin embargo,recientemente he dejado que la flojera me gane.
or just "recent"/reciente:
Esto de la inactividad es muy reciente.
