Since Scarlett showed her traitorous behavior at Twelve Oaks’ party, in Charles’ mourning period, she was unwillingly to wear the black mourning dress and took off it early. At the charitable ball Scarlett showed herself in public; danced with Butler in spite of the widowhood’s status and people’s dissatisfaction. The black mourning dress seemed like a cage which made by the male-dominated society that attempted to confine Scarlett. She seemingly had no other choices only by waiting for the death under the confinement of the cage. To a young lady at that time, when she became a widow, there was no brilliant prospect later, only lived in vain and despised by others. Unexpectedly, Scarlett took off it. More significantly, she took off the feudal traditionalism, took off the male social repression. “As Scarlett’s fearless behavior at the charitable ball, her rebelliousness in her personality challenges the male power and inspires people to reconsider the relationship of males and females.”[19]
