How can I say in this case? - to tell my friend I'm happy-

One day, something happy happened. It was like that my friend gave me a message.
Because of it, I was happy and I am still happy.
Then, how can I say about this feeling by one sentense?

- I was happy! or
- I am happy!

Which is correct?

Does "I was happy" include meanings of "I am STILL happy."?

Please tell me. And please correct my sentenses above.

I think "I am happy" would sound better.
