Hi

I found a sentence in my text book, which is "Do you think if it is possible?".

I thought it is weird. I think it should be "Do you think it is possible?".

同感！ The only way I can think of to have a sentence like that is something like this:

"Do you think, if it is possible, I could maybe stay here tonight?".

In that sentence both "if it is possible" and "maybe" are used to soften the request, but in your original sentence the "if" doesn't make sense.

Does it mean, "Can I stay here tonight?"??

"Do you think if it is possible?" "Yes. I think if it is possible." ...lol

Yep, that exactly what it means. It is kind of like in Japanese when you want to be polite what you are saying ends up getting a lot longer.


Can I stay here tonight?
今夜、泊まっていい？

Do you think, if it is possible, I could maybe stay here tonight?
今夜、もしよかったら、こちらにお泊りしていただけませんか？


敬語は苦手だけど、この感じかな？

そうですね。　ああ　でも　「お泊りしていただけませんか？」だと相手がとまることになってしまいますｘＤ　「もしよろしかったらでいいんですけれども、こちらに今夜とまってもよろしいでしょうか？」とかですかね。　ただ敬語って通じても実は間違いなんてこともたくさんあるので、正直僕もよくわからないですｗ
