先日八坂神社へお参りに行ったとき When my family and I went to Yasaka Shrine the other day

八坂神社は京都祇園の大変有名な神社です　Yasaka shrine is very famous and popular and is located at Gion area in Kyoto.

その近くでおみくじつきのハローキティーのストラップを見つけました I found a Hello Kitty cell phone strap which has a Omikuji, fortune near the shrine.

おみくじはフォーチューンですか　Does Omikuji mean a fortune, right?

ちゃんと　大吉、吉、末吉、凶とか出ますよ We can do fortune by it, which would come out Excellent, Good, Not bad, or Unlucky.

英語の訳はだいたいあってますかね Can I write these fortunes well in English?

というかアメリカとかの外国におみくじはあるのかな？ Do you have such a fortune in your country, especially in the US?

Is おみくじ a piece of paper that tells your fortune, and are people supposed to draw one from a stack like drawing lots?

Yes, exactly. Omikuji is a piece of paper. We would choose one at random when we pray at a shrine. Is drawing lots "a fortune", omikji?

(No, drawing lots is not called "a fortune." It is called lottery.)

I do not think "a fortune" alone can convey the meaning of おみくじ well, because おみくじ means a piece of paper with fortune-telling, and it also refers to the act of drawing, if I understood right. I think you will have to be a little flexible here. I would call it "a written fortune," if I mean to name it. But when I want to describe the act, I would say "to draw Omikuji or a written fortune."

Omikuji would be a fortune, you're right. In Canada (probably the US too) there is somthing called a "Magic 8 Ball." It looks like a billiard ball. You ask a question, and shake it. A cube inside turns around and shows an answer like "yes," "no," "maybe," "maybe later," etc. It's similar in concept, I think. Good job with this entry!
