I took my daughters to a toy store. It was a small leisuer for my daughters. I would be absent in Kyoto for a month so I told them that we would go there.
子供たちをおもちゃ屋さんへ連れて行きました。彼女たちにはレジャーです。京都を留守にするので、そこへ連れて行くと約束したからです。
It was not their birthday. So something reasonable were selected by them. Ah, as for me, I bought a small gift for a friend in Hong Kong there.
誕生日ではないので、簡単なものを選ばせました。ぼくも香港の友人にちょっとしたものを買いました
Another thing, They have just come to Hong Kong . Our family are not likely to go abroad if I had not gotten such an opportunity. I decided to take them to Hong Kong this weekend.
それと、ちょうど彼女たちは香港へ来ました。こういう機会がないとわたしら家族は海外へ行く機会が無いし、まあ、この週末だけですけどくることになったんですね。

I think it sounds better with a phrase such as "I knew" like this, but this is tricky because now (今日) you are talking about talking about the future in the past （１週間前にとっての未来）... あんまりきにしなくていいと思う (^_^;)

I think "small" is better than "reasonable" here.
