Tanuki are famous for making a sound like a drum by beating their bellies. For example, in the 17th year of Meiji, according to the yubinhoichi newspaper, the wife of a local photographer was keeping a baby tanuki as a pet. Late at night, the wife said, she could hear the baby tanuki practicing his belly-drums. The wife wanted to see what her pet was doing and she quietly entered the room where the baby tanuki was sleeping. She said the baby tanuki was lying on the tatami like a carpet. Sounds like a flute and drums were coming from his belly. Because a story like this was written in the newspaper, local people believe that its a true story about a magic tanuki.
