About me

“Hey, you!” a brooding, deep voice called from down the hall.
I was just about to leave from school. My backpack weighed myself down and I could feel the three text-books that I was carrying. As I heard the voice, I turned around, assuming he was speaking to me. I was hoping he wasn’t. Unfortunately, he was indeed talking to me. Not only that, but it was Boomer, the bully of our school.
His skin was a gross pale white, and he was big. He looked like he could eat three school-portioned lunches and still be hungry. He wore a black leather jacket, which only made his skin look sicker. His hands were in fists and he casted a glare at me that I wanted to avoid contact with. “You…” he started saying.
“You’ve practice karate, don’t you?” He asked, in a you-better-answer-me kind of tone.
“..Y..eess..” I barely spat out. To this day I never figured out how he knew that I had practiced karate. But I could still remember the fear that I had when seeing him for the first time. I was the kind of person to simply avoid those sorts of people, stay out of their way. What I didn’t know was that I couldn’t be passive here.
“Then we’re gonna be havin’ a fight!! Me and you! By the river, tomorrow, after school!” And with that, he shoved me to the wall, and stomped away. I didn’t know what to do. At first I wanted to run to the principal’s office and report the threat, but then I thought about the future consequences this guy would bring if I just ran to him.
I didn’t want to fight. I knew that much. I was always taught that I was never to fight unless the situation called for it. However, this wasn’t a good situation in my opinion. It was simply a fight to see that a big bully could pick on a puny wimp. I didn’t want to see that, and more importantely, I thought I didn’t want to get hurt. Karate was more than fighting, my teacher had always taught me. It was a lifestyle. It was bitter work. It was just as much mental as it was physical. Karate was used all the time. It was the choice of making up a lie in order to satisfy ones desires or be a truthful man. It was whether a man would walk with confidence or in fear. I knew all of what karate was. But I had never practiced it in these ways before.
Right after school, instead of studying, I rushed over to my Sensei’s house. My sensei was an old man, and he was an immigrant now, living in the united states. The outside of his house looked like a typical American’s house would look like. It was perfectly normal, however, you’d believe you were in another country on the inside.
When I got up to the door, I slid my shoes off – my sensei always had me do this before entering his house. He would say, “Ben-san! Show manners! Take off shoe!” in his thick accent. So I always did, because I never intended to be rude. Slowly, I knocked on his door. I was afraid to talk to him, because I already knew the answer he was going to tell me.
The door opened, and there was the familiar face of Sensei. “Ben-san!” He said, his face grinned. “What pleasure seeing you tonight!” he said happily. “Come in, we drink tea.” With that, he motioned his hands for me to enter.
The inside of his house was, as I said, a whole different world. The floors were made of bamboo wooding, and the only furniture in the house were mats and floor tables. Despite how uncomfortable this sounds, I still miss my sensei’s house, how many long hours I spent there hard at work in karate.
“Talk, Ben-san.” He said, as he poured the tea in both of our cups.
“Uh, erm, Sensei, you said that you must never fight unless needed to right?”
“Right” he replied.
“Then what do you do when challenged to a fight? A fight that is..it’s…useless. It’s just a stronger person wanting to take down the weak person! It’s not right! If the person doesn’t fight the stronger man, he is made out to be weak, but if he does and falls…I don’t know.”
“Ben-san, what heart tell you do.” He said, in the simplest reply.
“I will not be here always. I not one who makes choices for Ben. Ben make his choice. But for one who fight and fall…he try his best, correct?” stated Sensei. I loved it when he talked like this. I simply nodded to his question.
“And he not win on outside, but he win on inside. Good wins always…” he stopped slightly, as if he were looking for the right words in English. “Bad may look like winning, but more it look like winning, the more it loses, because bad people dye not from outside, but inside.
But that not reason for good to do nothing. Good has to always fight bad! Never stop! On inside and out!” He said, slamming his fist on the table. He was very excited, and I could tell that a lot of emotion was inside him here. I think I knew what to do now.
There was always going to be a fight between wrong and right. However if you did nothing, then the evil people would get what they want. And in the end, doing nothing is the same as being evil. I was proud of my decision. And the decision was between me and Boomer. No one else.
