Champ : Surprising science of how to motivate people (1)

I'll show you the power of incentives.

A professor in Princeton University did an experiment which is called "Candle Problem".
In Candle Problem, people are given a candle and tacks in a receptacle and a lighter.
Then, they have to light a candle not to get the wax dripped onto a table.
The solution is to put the candle on a receptacle and fix it on a wall with tacks.
But people often take 5 or 10 minutes to solve the problem, because in the receptacle, there are tacks, and they tend to consider it as a receptacle for tacks and don't use it for a receptacle for the wax.

He gathered students and divided them into 2groups.

He said to the first group like this:
"I want to time you and know the average time for typical people to take to solve this problem."

He also said to the other one like this:
"I'm gonna give you 10 dollars if you are in the top 25 percent of the fastest times, and you get 50 dollars if you are the fastest of everyone."

The result of the experiment is, against what most people might expect, that the average time of the second group is 3 minutes longer than the first one.

It wasn't an accident. It has replicated for 40 years.

It shows that extrinsic motivators, which most companies give to their workers, doesn't work better than intrinsic motivators.
It shows clearly that there is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does, and it's time to rethink about it.

Champ : big stone. (0)

A professor of philosopher came into a classroom with his bag. After the class was started, he filled a big bottle of mayonnaise with some stones which are about 5 centimeters big without any words. After filling it, he asked students if the bottle was full or not. The students said it was full.

Afterwards, he took some small stones out of his bag and filled the bottle with them. He shook it to fill it up, then he asked again if it was full or not. The students said it was full.

Then he filled it with some sand and he asked same question again. The students said it was full that time.

However, he took a can of beer and pour it into the bottle. Beer was soaking into the sand. The students couldn't do anything but laughing.

'So', he said after they became quiet. 'Your life is like this bottle. And the big stones are most important things for you such as your family, friends, and health, etc. If you lost everything except them, your life would be still full. The small stones are other important things. Your work, house, car, etc. The sand is the other things, I mean, not important things at all.'

'If you fill a bottle with sand', he continued talking. 'The bottle cannot have a space to put stones. Your life is the same thing. If you spend your time and labor doing worthless things, you cannot have time to do important things for you. What is important is to think about important things for your happiness. Going out with your girlfriend, taking a time to play with your kids in the future. You can always take time to spend working, having a party. Think about stones. It is really important thing, because the other things are just sand.'

Then, a student raised his hand and asked what beer meant.
The professor smiled and answered, 'It is a good question. I wanted to show that if you feel your life is full, you always have a time to drink beer.'

Champ : How to become a leader. (0)

I'd like to tell you how to become a leader.

There are 3 important points.

First, when you wanna be a leader, you should have enough courage to be ridiculed.
Remember, all things that now are very popular in the world were just "strange" at that time they started.

Second, a thing you want to achieve must be easy to follow.
The most important thing to become a leader is to have followers.
So remember, you can't be a leader without followers.

Finally, if you find a strange person who you think is doing great thing, you should follow and cheer up him/her.
This is because if you wanna make people your followers, you should understand follower's feelings and make bonds among you and others.

Therefore, if you wanna be a leader, you should understand these points, and make an act as soon as possible.

Thank you.

p.s.
How do you think to be a leader and make a movement?

Champ : Biggest Earthquake (0)

Biggest earthquake Japan has ever experienced occurred 2:46 pm yesterday.

At that time, I was in the office which is on 9th floor of the building located in Shibuya, Tokyo.
At first, it shook little so I didn't care much about it because it's common to occur a little earthquake in Japan.
However, it gradually got bigger, I found my co-workers' face getting anxious, and the thing which is said that Tokyo would have a very big earthquake in near future came across in my head. The boss said to all workers "Hide yourself under your desk!!", and all of them except the boss and a brave worker who still stood up because he thought he should keep shelves from falling down hid under it.
During the peak of the earthquake, I could do nothing but grab legs of my desk desperately. I heard crashes of falling down a printer, files, and many things on the desks.
I felt I was gonna die.

After getting calmed down, we went out of the office and walked down the stairs, not using an elevator because it's very dangerous to use it after the earthquake, nobody knows when it would become again.

To be continued...
(I'll write a continuation tomorrow.)

Champ : Do you believe in "Personality Transplants"? (4)

I hear that Many people who received another person's organ think that they also received his/her personality with the organ.

Do you think it actually happens?

I agree with this idea.
Of course, there is no proof that it really happens scientifically, but whether it happens or not depends on how patients feel.
I think even if the transplanted organ is not the heart, patients feel something strange, because another person's organ is actually in their body.

Although I always don't believe in things which are not scientific, I believe in people's emotions even if it's not scientific. This is because no one can explain what "love" is, but all people can feel and have felt "love".
That's why I believe in what many patients say.(They feel they were transplanted personality with the organ.)

What do you think about it?

I'm sorry it's too long.
But I'm forward to seeing your kind corrections!
Thank you for reading my opinion!
