My life in the UK: Japanese expression " Kuuki wo yomu" ( Read the air)

Kuuki wo yomu( read the air) means ; I do not express directly what i think/ what a situation is, but I expect you to understand them from the face expressions of people or how the conversations goes.

In Japan, everyone has to be able to do this at some levels, otherwise people might look down...like "This person cannot read the air..." "この人は空気を読めない”

I'll give you for example.
Husband; Look at this, honey!! That's so funny.
wife; I'm so busy at the moment, I'm washing the dishes now, ready for meal tonight and I got so much things to do in the kitchen.
Husband; Oh, are you? ok no problem! I'll show you later.
Wife: You cannot read the air. I want you to help me out!
Husband; Why didn't you tell me in the first place?

Can you read the air?
