“The thought of peeling a pear never even crossed my mind”
“Why would you peel a grape???? It’s so much effort for a small fruit...”

Cultural differences – Fruits

I find the culture difference of Japan quite interesting. A while ago, I watched a video about whether Japanese people peel a certain fruit and eat it or eat it with the skin on. The interviewer, Cathy Cat, asked whether they peel either a kiwi, pear, grape, apple or cherry. Most of them said that they peel grapes, pears and apples but I was really surprised that someone would bother to take the time to peel a grape! (笑)Before watching the video, I had never even thought about peeling grapes. I know Japan has different varieties of grapes like 巨峰 but even when I was in Japan, I bought 巨峰 and ate them whole.

On the contrary, there was another video made but this time Cathy Cat asked foreigners instead.
I found the comments section of the video quite funny:

“The thought of peeling a pear never even crossed my mind”
“Why would you peel a grape???? It so much effort for a small fruit...”

I agree with most of what they’re saying and I think some people like me usually eat the skin of most fruits, even peaches. I asked some Japanese people before whether they eat the skin of a peach but all of them said no and all of them were shocked when I told them I did haha 😊 I remember when I was a child, I ate a kiwi with the skin on but soon afterwards I felt quite sick (笑)
