to wear bogu, we have to prove that our kendo skill is well improved, at least to have a predicate as SanKyuu. And before we have right to wear bogu, we are not allowed to join practice with senior. All that beginner have to do in training are: step practice=ashi sabaki, suburi=swinging practice, and attack dummy target, usually using shinai which is held horizontally by another beginners.
